Life Insurance and Beneficiaries

Miami-Dade County pays the premium to cover you for Basic Life Insurance at an amount equal to your annual adjusted base salary.

New employees will be automatically enrolled during the initial benefits eligibility period. You must be actively at work for coverage to start.

Life insurance amounts in excess of $50,000 may be taxable and may be included as taxable income on your W-2 form.

  • Optional Life Insurance

You may purchase Optional Life Insurance during the annual enrollment in April. Coverage is available for multiples of 1 to 5 times your base salary, up to a maximum of $2 million.

During the annual enrollment period, you may enroll for the first time, view your current election, and change your coverage. Visit Metlife - MyBenefits during the open enrollment period to make coverage elections.

Premiums are age-based and depend on the amount of coverage purchased. You pay the full cost of this coverage. A Statement of Health may be required. Newly-hired employees may elect coverage from 1 to 3 times their annual salary without completing a Statement of Health form.

  • Beneficiary Designation

    Life Insurance
You must designate at least one beneficiary of your lifei nsurance, even if you don’t sign up for optional life insurance coverage. Just log in to eNet and select Beneficiary Designation under the Secure eNet Services.

    County Death Benefits
When a permanent status and career exempt employee dies, we determine what benefits are available to their survivors. If Life Insurance is not available, the County will pay the employee’s beneficiaries an amount determined by the employee’s years of continuous County service. The beneficiaries are also eligible to continue their medical and dental coverage for either one or two pay periods (based on the employee’s longevity).

To update your beneficiary designation for the County Death Benefit use the County Death Benefit Beneficiary Designation Form. You can also contact your Departmental Personnel Representative (DPR) or the Benefits Administration Unit for this form. Paper beneficiary forms that are submitted must be notarized.

  • Will Preparation

Employees enrolled in the Optional Life Insurance plan have access to two value added services offered by Hyatt Legal Plans, a MetLife company:

    • Will Preparation
    • Estate Resolution Services

Beneficiaries can work with a Hyatt Legal attorney for assistance with probate-related items such as document preparation and related tax items.

Human Resources

The Human Resources Department provides centralized personnel services for all County departments.

We work with departments to identify and assist with workforce issues including a renewed emphasis on performance management and standardized discipline policies, employee development and knowledge transfer, ongoing evaluation of workplace rules, and implementation of workforce metrics to measure and analyze overtime utilization, absenteeism, appeals, payroll issues, and employee development needs.

We coordinate negotiation of collective bargaining agreements and develop viable and sustainable healthcare options. Employee programs include training, wellness and diversity.

We provide residents and employees with a means to have discrimination cases heard and resolved through investigation, mediation, and appeals.
