Service from the heart

Esther Frometa, a Grants Specialist with the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), has dedicated more than 22 years to serving Miami-Dade County.
“I was hired by DTPW, formerly Miami-Dade Transit, on March 15, 2004, as a Quality Service Specialist,” Esther recalls. Not long after, she was promoted to Transportation Planner II, a role she held for 16 years before transitioning to her current position as a Grants Specialist just over two years ago.
“In my current role, I work closely with more than 40 nonprofit organizations to help ensure their state grant funding is secured, allowing them to support and sustain important community-based programs,” Esther shared.
Her role has given her the opportunity to see the direct impact of her work. “I’m often deeply moved by the work these agencies do. Their efforts provide meaningful support, offering people a second chance at life, housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, transportation for children to receive tutoring, and meals for those in need.”
Helping others comes naturally to Esther. “I find myself helping people in need all the time. Oftentimes, I’ll see people on my way to my car at Overtown Transit Village and lend a helping hand where I can,” she said. “I love working with people, and I love being able to help them.”
Some of Esther’s most meaningful experiences came during times of crisis. During the 2005 hurricane season, she played a key role in coordinating assistance efforts at Amelia Earhart Park, working alongside the County, the City of Hialeah, and the National Guard to support residents in need.
“During those times, our community came together, and we helped a lot of people. Helping others is something that is close to my heart,” she said.
Her commitment to service extends beyond her professional role. “I’m also an active member of my children’s PTA and serve as a liaison between middle school parents and staff. I don’t know where I find the time, but it’s something I truly enjoy.”
When asked what motivates her, Esther didn’t hesitate: “I’m thankful and grateful for waking up today. Someone had plans today and didn’t make it.”
The youngest of five children, Esther was the caretaker for her late mother and is a devoted mother of two teenagers. She is also an avid runner who has participated in the Lexus Corporate Run and the Miami Marathon, and she is currently training for the 7-Mile Bridge Run.
Keep THRIVING, Esther!
