Answering the call

On June 24, 2026, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela just 39 seconds apart, causing widespread devastation, collapsing buildings and trapping thousands of people.
In response to a request from the U.S. Department of State, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Urban Search and Rescue Team, Florida Task Force 1 (FL-TF1), deployed on June 26 alongside Florida Task Force 2 (FL-TF2) to support international search-and-rescue operations. During the eight-day deployment, the 80-member Type I task force, which included six canine teams and specialists in technical search, rescue, structural engineering, hazardous materials, logistics and advanced medical care, conducted numerous search missions throughout La Guaira state.
Working alongside fellow U.S. task forces, Virginia Task Force 1 (VA-TF1), California Task Force 2 (CA-TF2) and FL-TF2, as well as emergency responders from more than 50 countries, FL-TF1 carried out complex search operations while providing comfort and reassurance to affected communities.
For many task force members, the deployment was especially meaningful. Many are from South Florida and were able to communicate directly with residents in Spanish, helping build trust and provide clear, compassionate updates during an incredibly difficult time. Leaving behind their own families, they stood beside families whose lives had changed in an instant, serving as a symbol of hope through professionalism, compassion and a commitment to helping others.
Throughout the mission, FL-TF1 remained focused on one goal: bringing hope to those affected while working tirelessly alongside local and international partners in the aftermath of the disaster.
