Setting the bar

Kevin Chong
Kevin Chong is not someone who seeks attention, but his work ethic and dedication consistently set him apart. Over his 20-year career with Miami-Dade County, Kevin has built a reputation as someone committed to finding solutions.

He began his career in the Information Technology Department as a telecommunications technician in the field before being assigned to the downtown depot in the Human Resources Department at the Stephen P. Clark Center. In 2013 he joined Parks as a PROS sales system specialist at Zoo Miami before being promoted to his current position. “I’ve always been someone that, when I’m assigned a task, I can’t move on until I find a solution,” shared Kevin. This mindset has become essential to his success.

Since joining the team at Zoo Miami, Kevin has been an integral member of the Operations team. His work is felt across the entire zoo division. From point-of-sale registers and the online ticket store to digital displays and the beloved animal webcams, Kevin ensures these systems run smoothly so staff and guests can have an enjoyable experience.

Staci Otero, PROS Division Chief for Zoo Administration shared “[Kevin] is one of the most dependable, steady, solutions-oriented professionals on our team. His positive attitude, even-keeled demeanor, and his ability to balance technical expertise with a calm, people-first approach make him an invaluable part of the Zoo Miami family.”

When asked how he stays calm under pressure, Kevin explained, “Every problem has a solution. When you’re looking for a solution, you have to troubleshoot, and if you’re panicking and not levelheaded, you can overlook the solution.”

Kevin’s contributions recently earned him the honor of Zoo Miami’s Employee of the Quarter. His nomination highlighted his commitment to excellence.

“Kevin sets the bar when it comes to dedication, organization, and commitment. He is an invaluable asset, and his expertise and the way he performs his duties set him apart. I have never met a more accommodating or helpful person in my career. He is level-headed, low-key, and willing to do whatever it takes,” Otero said.

“Kevin has spearheaded many projects that have improved efficiency and enhanced the guest experience, including the Cloud Forest digital screen project, expanding network connectivity throughout Zoo Miami and leading the Zoo Marquee screen replacement project.”

Diana Vega, PROS division chief for zoo operations celebrated Kevin’s success by adding, “At the zoo, we believe every challenge has a solution and Kevin embodies that mindset every day. He is solution-focused, positive and easygoing; he’s the kind of person everyone loves to work with. He listens carefully to feedback, values different perspectives and uses technology in creative ways to make life easier for employees and to elevate the guest experience. It’s truly a pleasure working alongside Kevin and we’re grateful for the innovation, critical thinking, and positivity he brings to our team.”

Outside of work, Kevin enjoys spending time with his wife, Michelle, his children and his three grandchildren, with a fourth on the way.
